OHIO INTERNSHIP JUSTIFICATION: To increase the numbers of school based SLPs in hard to staff public school districts of the state. The program will utilize highly trained graduate students who will provide speech language pathology service to Ohio’s special education students. SLP student intern’s scope and practice are defined by the Ohio Board of Speech Language Pathology Student Permit: http://www.slpaud.ohio.gov/application2.htm#stud Rules and requirements supporting OBSLPA SLP Student Permit are available at: http://www.slpaud.ohio.gov/pdfs/Requirements%20for%20a%20Student%20Permit.pdf . Several of Ohio's ASHA accredited graduate programs in speech language pathology participate in the Internship graduate program model. COMMITMENTS: The University will: Offer academic opportunity for students to complete all required coursework combined with supervised practicum experiences leading to completion of the Master's in Speech Language Pathology, licensure by the Ohio Board of Speech Language Pathology, and eligibility for ASHA's Certificate of Clinical Competence. Participating universities are: The School District will: Complete School District Application for participation in Internship Graduate Program in speech language pathology. Collaborate with OMNIE in identification and recruitment of potential candidates from local area OR accept ODE/OMNIE intern placement of current university graduate student.. Provide graduate student support at a rate of $26,000 plus medical and state teachers retirement benefits for each year of internship. Assist in identifying and securing supervision by ASHA certified SLP. Employ licensed speech-language pathologist for two-three years following graduate program completion and OBSLPA licensure. Employment credit will be given for each year of full-time internship experience. The Ohio Department of Education will: Assist in the identification of school districts demonstrating continued difficulty recruiting and retaining SLP service delivery. Assist local districts in the recruitment of potential graduate program candidates from local region. Fund $12,000 student stipend for tuition during intense on-campus coursework during first year of graduate program. Support administrative salary, course delivery, home university costs, and supervisors to teach; supervise and develop practicum sites, and manage administrative issues. The SLP Intern Program Applicant will: Meet all university Requirements for Admission. Submit Preliminary Application to OMNIE no later than January 1.
Submit formal application directly to participating university(s) by deadline date: Successfully complete all university's academic and clinical requirements leading to licensure by the Ohio Board of Speech Language Pathology and Audiology (OBSLPA) and the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA). Commit to a total of 4 years of school district participation -in a combination of internship and district employment. Accept internship school district assignment to be determined by OMNIE and the Ohio Department of Education.
